In 2016, Subotica, Serbia was a transit-zone for refugees hoping to reach Western Europe. The legal way took months in makeshift refugee camps, so many paid €700 to €1,500 to be smuggled across the border instead. From Subotica, they would walk miles through the forest in the middle of the night. Those caught by Hungarian border police were beaten, attacked by dogs, forcibly shoved back through the border fence, or all the above. After a few nights back in Subotica, they try again.
